   THE EXUMAS

The Exuma islands are a string of islands and cays that form a pearl necklace of long forgotten hideaways, natural harbors and secluded beaches, that span over a hundred miles of clear blue water--a new island for every day of the year. The Exuma chain comprises about 360 or more cays, that stretch for about 130 miles beginning 30 miles southeast of New Providence (Nassau).

If beach-combing, snorkeling, and exploring one of the least developed areas of the Bahamas appeals to you, then a sailing charter in the Exuma out-islands of the Bahamas just might fulfilll your dreams.

Home to the Bahamas National Trust’s Exuma National Land and Sea Park--one of the largest underwater and land preserves, Exuma is a nature lover's paradise kept in its original pristine setting.

The Park consists of underwater limestone and coral reefs, drop-offs, blue holes, caves and marine life, and is home to the Bahamian iguana, a giant lizard-like creature.

Your Exuma  sailing charter begins and ends at Staniel Cay, conveniently located about half way down the island chain.  This allows us to easily access the 'best of' the Exumas.  Several 'hopper' flights leave daily from Nassau and fly into Staniel Cay.    All of our sailing is done on the Exuma Banks, the more protected side of the Islands.

Here is what a  typical weeklong itinerary in the Exumas might be like:

Day 1 - Your Bahamas Sailing Charter begins with a golfcart ride from the airport, which will transport you  to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club, where you will be met by your Captain.  A short dinghy ride will take you to Civil Twilight, where you can get settled and start getting that  'laid-back' attitude.  You will most likely be greeted by one of the resident swimming pigs of Big Major Cay.

Day 2 - Before leaving Staniel Cay/Big Majors, snorkeling Thunderball Cave is a must!  Named after the movie "Thunderball", a James Bond flick filmed here n the '70s, this limestone grotto is a thrill to enter, swimming among the hundreds of tropical fish.  A short sail in the afternoon will take us up island to Cambridge Cay, the southern extreme of the Exuma Land and Sea Park.

Day 3 - There are several ways to spend your time at Cambridge Cay.  Snorkeling the "Sea Aquarium", a spectacular wall dive is high on the list.  In only about 20 feet of water, this is can easily be snorkeled.  You'll instantly be surrounded by angelfish.
A walk on Baby Conch Beach is unforgettable.  Everywhere you look, baby conchs abound.

Or maybe a walk to the other side of the island, to explore the beach, or just hang-out.

At low tide, a group of caves called the 'Rocky Dundas' can be snorkeled...exhilerating!  Cambridge Cay has so much to offer, you might want to spend a couple of days here.

Day 4 & 5 - Today we leave Cambridge Cay, and make our next stop at Waderick Wells, the park headquarters of the Exuma Land and Sea Park.  If you're ready for a hike...Warderick Wells has many trails to offer.  Almost all trails lead to the beach, so keep your bathing suit on!  When your done hiking, there are several sites for snorkeling.  Or maybe you'll want to catch up with the outside world...wifi is available here!  Somewhere along the way, maybe tonight, there will be a beach party...cruisers from around the globe have a potluck on the beach.  Always fun...you'll have new friends before the evening is through!

Day 6 - Shroud Cay, also part of the Park, is our next stop. Take a dinghy ride through the maze of mangroves that lead to the ocean side of the island. Breathtaking beaches, with no one but you to enjoy them!

Day 7 - This morning  it's time to head back to Staniel Cay, pack your bags, and say good-bye.  We hope to see you again!

THE ABACOS

The Abacos, the northern most island chain in the Bahamas, is referred to as the

Sailing Capital of the World.   Sailing in the shallow protected waters of the Sea of Abaco is a dream come true.  Rays gliding beneath your boat can be seen through the crystal clear waters.

More populated than the Exumas, the Abacos offers a multitude of beach bars and restaurants, as well as  a championship 18 hole golf course.

But don't worry,  somewhere in the long necklace of pale-sanded islands and often uninhabited cays, extending over 120 miles, you're sure to find the ideal private spot to enjoy a good book and a glass of wine, or just ogle at the beauty of your surroundings.

If you're looking for a chance to view the underwater wildlife, The Pelican Cay National Park, an underwater sea park, is a snorkeling paradise.

Here is what a  typical weeklong itinerary in the Abacos might be like:

Day 1 - Your flight arrives in Marsh Harbour, and it's just a short  taxi ride to the harbor. You will be met by the Captain, who will dinghy you out  to Civil Twilight, which will be anchored in Marsh Harbour.  Unpack, settle in, then take a walk around town to visit the shops and scope out those souveniers to take home with you.  Marsh Harbour is the 'big city' of the Abacos. Or maybe you just want to relax after a hectic day of traveling.  Appetizers and rum drinks on board might be just the ticket after a long day of travel!  We'll stay here tonight, then in the morning we'll weigh anchor and move on.

Even the rainy days are beautiful

Day 2 - A sail across the Sea of Abaco brings us to Guana Cay, home of the infamous "Nippers".  Sitting atop a hill  overlooking the ocean-side of the island, Nippers is a restaurant/beach bar that is a must-stop.  Just a short walk (or golf cart ride) through a tropical woods, you walk right into Nippers.  The 7-mile-long beach below is perfect for walking or swimming, with an off-shore reef for snorkeling...what more can you ask for.  Maybe a quick dip in the pool to rinse off the salty water!

Day 3  & 4- If conditions permit, we'll sail out  'The Whale', and up to Green Turtle Cay.  Green Turtle is surrounded by sandy, uninhabited beaches.  If you enjoy diving, this is the place to set up a dive trip with Brendels Dive Shop.  Or maybe you'd like to rent a golf cart and visit the quaint fishing settlement  of New Plymouth.  The architecture is New England, but the pink, turquoise and lavender paint  screams Bahamas.

Day 5 - Back around "The Whale" to Treasure Cay.  Situated on Great Abaco, a 5 minute walk and you are standing on Treasure Cay Beach, named "One Of The 10 Best Beaches In The World” by National Geographic.  Three and a half miles of white powdery sand overshadowed only by the brilliantly clear turquoise water. This is also where you can get in 18-holes of golf, or just sit by the pool and enjoy a cocktail.  The Treasure Cay Marina is home to several fishing charters...maybe a half day of bonefishing in the flats, or heading off-shore for wahoo or mahi-mahi.  There's lots to do...or nothing to do.  The choice is yours.

Day 6 -  The week is coming to a close.  You may choose to  spend one more day at Treasure Cay before heading back to Marsh Harbour, or maybe you want to see one more island, or perhaps go back to one of the places you didn't get enough of.  The itinerary is open to your wishes.

Day 7 -  This morning we sail back to Marsh Harbour and say our 'good-byes'...until next time!

waiting for the green flash

Those who have been to The Bahamas many times still seek the elusive green flash--a natural tropical phenomenon occurring at sunset. Very rarely, on utterly cloudless days and just after the sun has disappeared beneath the sea, a brilliant band of green light as wide as the sun itself will flash across the horizon. Hunting the elusive green flash is relatively simple for those determined enough--just make sure that every evening is spent comfortably watching the sun drop slowly into the ocean.
