SAILING INSTRUCTION

Sail instruction tailored to suit your needs!  All courses are non-structured (no 'classroom') and can be as intense or casual as you desire.  Instruction is included in the base charter rates.  Just let us know at booking what course you are interested in.

Bareboat Chartering

Maybe you already know the basics of sailing, and you would love to bareboat charter in the Caribbean, but you're not quite sure if you have the necessary skills.  We have chartered in the Caribbean many times, as well as the Bahamas and Florida, so we know what the charter companies expect you to know.  We can prepare a 2-day course especially for you that will address those aspects of sailing that will give you the expertise and confidence to charter your own boat.

Covered in this course would be:

anchoring
picking up a mooring
reefing
basic chart navigation
basic GPS navigation
daily checks
Boat Maintenance

Want to learn about the systems on your boat, so you don't have to be dependent on high-priced marinas to handle the maintenance that you could do yourself?

The following topics would be covered if you choose this option:
oil changes
fuel filters
fuel/water seperators
engine alignment
transmission fluid
belts
engine mounts
starter motors
alternators

Navigation

Ocean sailing requires navigational skills.  We can teach you chart reading and basic navigating on paper charts, as well as the use of GPS, electronic chartplotters and radar.  As the holder of a 'Radar Observer-Unlimited' addendum on his U.S. CoastGuard Captains license, Alan is qualified to teach you how to read a radar screen for the use in navigation and collision avoidance.

Electrical Systems

Want to learn about the electrical systems on your boat?  Alan holds an ABYC Marine Electrical Certification.

The following topics could be covered, depending on your needs:
Basic system designs
Batteries and shorepower
Inverters and Battery chargers
Electrical panels
Starters and Alternators
Hi-output alternators and Smart regulators
Installing equipment
Sizing breakers and wires
Solar and Wind generators
Common problems and fixes
